pranayama

Pranayama, often translated as the “extension” or “refinement” of prana (vital energy), and often called “breath control”. Pranayama occupies a central place in classical yoga, much older than complex yoga poses. In the Haṭhayogapradipika (15th c.), pranayama is presented not merely as breathing exercises, but as a profound psycho-physical discipline designed to steady the mind, purify the nāḍīs (subtle channels), and prepare the practitioner for meditation. This text famously teaches that when the breath is unsteady, the mind is unsteady; when the breath is steady, the mind becomes steady. Through practices such as nāḍī śodhana (alternate nostril breathing), kumbhaka (breath retention), and regulated inhalation and exhalation, practitioners cultivate clarity, resilience, and inner balance.
Modern research increasingly supports what yogic texts have long maintained: intentional breathwork can reduce stress, improve vagal tone, enhance emotional regulation, and support overall well-being. Whether or not we can achieve magical powers is up to debate!
Agni has been studying the Hathayogapradipia at great depth in their graduate studies, and is offering a pranayama session. If you would like to experience these benefits firsthand, we warmly invite you to join our Prāṇāyāma class on Sunday, April 5th at 4 PM. Together we will explore foundational techniques in a grounded, accessible way—suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners.
Here are three accessible articles on the benefits of breathwork:
